Pleasantly surprised that the unit came with all the relevant cables including the Firewire 800 cable.
No formatting required at all for my MacBook Pro. Connected without a hitch over F/W 800. Set up Time
Machine and went on about my business...

Works well and Time Machine recognized it and put it to work with no issues. Only disappointment is that it is fairly noisy when it is running.
