  SSD Migration,  2013-03-12

I have been planning to change from a conventional hard drive to an SSD in my aging Dell laptop for quite a while. The price on the Samsung 840 was very reasonable. The unit arrived very quickly with the free shipping. My only oversight, and one that is not clearly mentioned in the literature is that you will need some sort of connection between your computer and the SSD if you intend to used the supplied software to clone your disk. You will need a cable that allows you to go from the SATA connections on the SSD to a USB port on your computer. I ended up buying a Vantec CB-SATAU3 NexStar SuperSpeed Hard Drive Adapter - 2.5"/3.5" SATA to USB 3.0 cable, even though I only have USB 2.0 on the computer. It worked flawlessly. In about 2 hours, my 500 GB SSD had a clone copy of the 500 GB conventional hard drive. I plugged it into the computer and it worked. I am very pleased with the unit and the service from MacMall.

Anyone doing this conversion, even if you do a fresh install of all your software, will benefit greatly by doing some research into how to best benefit from your new SSD. Until you do some system tweaking, the gains in startup time and other things will not be very apparent.
