Sylvania 7" Smartbook, 2013-03-20 By So Cal Customer
There are definitely some issues and limitations with this product. The operating system is very dated and not up-gradable as a result the browser is also dated and cannot open some webpages. A visit to the Sylvania webpage links to an external source where some fixes can be installed that make the unit viable for gmail and yahoo mail. Internet access also has issues. Connecting to wifi requires inputting the host's security key which might be different from the password. Additionally, page loads are extremely slow.
There are some positives. This unit is very cheap, very small, has a built in keyboard, 3 USB ports, and an ethernet port. Start up time is fast and it can be set to auto-connect to a preferred wireless network. Picture quality on the screen is reasonably good and some video files can be played easily with the pre-installed viewing application.
On a personal note, I bought this unit for the primary purpose of doing some of my online coursework in my car while waiting for my son. I am able to accomplish this by using my mobile phone as a mobile hotspot. Despite the need to spend a few hours removing the bugs and the lag times, the unit serves the purpose I purchased it for. Therefore, although I would not recommend it for someone who is looking for a high performance mini-laptop, for my purposes it was an excellent purchase.
