Great for active servers, not so much for home systems,  2013-04-30
By Tom

The drive performs well, through FW800 I was getting about 55 MB/sec throughput (transferring from a faster thunderbolt drive as the GRAID was acting as a time machine backup drive). However, there are two things that make this drive not appropriate for home use.

1) Ok, this is a small point, but the activity light it like a strobe light in intensity and frequency. If the computer this drive is attached to is in a dark room it will look like a disco when it's transferring data. Worse still, there is no way to disable the activity light via firmware. Black duct tape is what web searches and forums could best provide as a workaround. Pretty weak

2) This is the much bigger issue. If your computer sleeps, or you set OSX to sleep hard drives when possible, there is a high probability that the drive will not wake up again until it is completely unplugged and power cycled. Again, having your computer on all the time and all the drives spinning all the time is 1-Very inefficient and 2-white noise that just isn't necessary. IF you disable sleeping the hard drives, I think this improves the problem considerably, but why should all my hard drives need to spin all the time just because the GRAID can seem to handle sleep/wakeup (at least from FW800, which is what I was using).

So, if you are building a work machine that will be always on or a mini data production centre, this is probably a great drive for backups or lower res work. Just keep it always on and spinning and make sure the AC and noise canceling headphones are working properly!

I'm going back to LaCie as every drive I bought from them (new and refurbished) has worked flawlessly.
