  Academic Upgrade of Mac Office,  2012-08-25

Since I only just upgraded to an Intel Mac, this is the first upgrade of Office I've installed in several years. First off, I was extremely impressed with the changes in Word (the application I use the most), for many of the changes I formerly had to make by hand to the talk bar are now set up more conveniently by Microsoft. I was especially pleased with the expanded page layout features of Word. The whole package strikes me as more elegant and easier to use than Word for Mac 2008.
But imagine my surprise when I opened Outlook (which has now taken the place of Entourage) and discovered that it was not included in my Academic package! The only way for me to get Outlook would be to upgrade to the personal edition of Office for $100! So much for Academic pricing! To make matters worse, although I could easily import all of my mail folders into Outlook, I could not export them in a format that Apple Mail could use. In order to import my mail folders into Apple Mail I would have to have Entourage installed on my machine—which is no longer possible. That means that I either have to spend $100 to get Outlook, or lose over ten years of saved correspondence on Entourage. I have a month of free trial in Outlook to make up my mind. Thanks, Microsoft!
